Living in hypocrisy: McCain’s gay Chief of Staff, working against gay Americans
John McCain’s Chief of Staff, Mark Buse, has helped develop a very anti-gay platform for the politician while living as a gay man. This ironic way of life has won Buse the “Roy Cohn Award” for hypocrisy delivered on Friday to the Senator’s office. How can a gay man work to enact laws that restrict or remove his own rights and the rights of his family/partner? John McCain’s platform includes anti-gay positions in every case. He has gone on record for California’s Prop 8 that would repeal the gay civil right to marry, he supports the policy that requires gays in the military to lie about their sexual orientation to keep their jobs, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), and he is opposed to the hate crimes bill and the non-discrimination act that would not allow firing gay Americans due to their sexual orientation.
The Anti-Gay Senator has had a 20-year relationship with Buse and is apparently aware his Chief of Staff is gay. McCain knows that sexual orientation has no negative effects and should not determine the way a person is treated. So why does he work so hard to enact laws that restrict gay rights? He knows it’s wrong. But does the hypocrisy matter?
Yes. The hypocrisy matters to Americans and it matters in presidential elections. Is a person who acts one way but speaks a contrary story, trustworthy? Will that person be consistent? Will the platform be stable? If you don’t want gays in the military unless they lie about their life, but you employ one to lead your staff, what does that really say about you? He is living a lie. He should stop working against gay Americans. If you want to lead the free world you should WALK the TALK.
