OJ’s all-white jury trial begins, he faces life in prison
O.J. Simpson’s trial begins today in Vegas. He is charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime, assault and kidnapping with a deadly weapon. OJ claims he was just trying to get his personal sports memorabilia property back.He faces a jury of nine white women and three white men. Does this seem like a fair assembly of “his peers” to determine if he will spend the rest of his life behind bars?
I say no. The population of the US is over 13% african american, so it seems to me at least 1 or 2 jurors should be african american. Is it possible that he has 12 white jurors who are completely non-biased and racism-free? Of course it is possible, after all, Obama won the Iowa caucuses, right? But for a man whose trail in the 90’s was labeled the “Trial of the Century” and was so surrounded by protests and allegations of racism, this just does not seem to be the prudent course of action.
Even today, many believe OJ was guilty of the murder of his (white) wife. Yet 9 white women will weigh in on whether he is guilty on this series of charges. I understand the process of jury selection, I was called upon for jury duty this summer, but I do NOT like this result and I do NOT like O.J.’s chances.
Is it racist to ask the question?
