Nuclear Plants stand up to Hurricane Ike and Senator McCain misplaces his slide rule
The South Texas Project (STP) Nuclear Plant is located in Bay City, Texas, just 75 miles southeast of Galveston, where Hurricane Ike unleashed its fury early this morning.STP nuclear plant intended to shut down its nuclear reactors (and therefore all electricity production) if winds at the site were forecasted to be over 73 mph (a pre-established wind speed). The plant would then declare an “Unusual Event,” the lowest of four emergency classifications. This event would be declared due to shutting down the reactors (not due to any damage). If damage occurred to safety-related structures at the plant, an “Alert” would be declared, the second lowest of four emergency classifications.
Hurricane Ike is now moving away from STP and winds did not rise to the 73 mph level. The highest wind speed I saw was 27 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Yesterday STP’s two reactors were both at 100% power and were able to continue to produce power for the region.
Nuclear plant designs in the US are extremely robust and are specifically designed to withstand hurricane force winds and many other natural disasters and emergencies. STP’s nuclear reactors have been operating and generating electricity for Texas since the late 80’s.
This week John McCain demonstrated again that he was “out of touch” with all things technological. When asked what he would have done differently after 9/11 (rather than tell America to go shop) he responded that he would call upon citizens to serve their country, urge neighborhood block watches and secure our nuclear power plants. As president THOSE would be your priorities?! News flash John, our nuclear fleet was already the most robust of all our American Infrastructure. Although the nuclear industry acted to further enhance plant security to address small forces of terrorists, the plants have always been secure. Designs from the 1960’s and 70’s already had considered direct jet crashes... And they did it with something you may be familiar with: slide rules!

I had some really dear friends who died from AIDS-one in particular. His family wasn't around and he didn't have many friends. I spent a lot of time with him in his later days.
